THE FRIDAY A.L.R.T.

Volume 10, Issue 04                                  August 29, 2008

Information of importance, interest and curiosity for A.L.R.T. Administrative Center Staff

OF IMPORTANCE

Two new members have joined the ALRT Group.  Tami Zappa began on Wednesday in Therapeutic Radiology as Executive Assistant to Dr. Dusenbery.  Her email is zappa009@umn.edu, and her phone number is 4-6433.  Gordon Willard will begin on September 2 as the residency program coordinator in Anesthesiology.  Gordon’s email is still to come, but his phone number is 5-4116.  Welcome!

Batten down the hatches! The Republican National Convention is September 1-4 and the students are back on campus. During a Starbucks stop at the Radisson yesterday I noticed banners welcoming the Virginia and Virgin Islands delegations.  Anticipating heavier traffic on campus is probably an understatement.  Allow additional travel time if you drive to campus.  I heard on the news this morning that some access routes into downtown St. Paul have already been shut down for the next week.

The University Stores’ big open house, loved by all, (free lunch, pens, pencils, paper, and gizmos) will be September 10th from 10:00-2:00 at the Radisson.  Lunch will be served 11:00-1:00.  More than 50 vendors and U departments will be showcasing their products and services, available either through University Stores or U-Wide Contracts.  It’s the “trick ‘n treat” of University life!

OF INTEREST

Take a look at your M Key.  More than 1,000 will be replaced due to a manufacturing defect that leads to premature failure.  The M Key establishes a user's identity through a two-factor authentication system, increases security, and reduces risk. If yours is affected it will have a serial number on it that starts with an “E” and you will receive an email notification.  For more information, visit M key.

Thinking of honing your technology skills?  The University Technology Center offers in-person and online learning opportunities for all University faculty, staff, and students, to help make the most out of technology. For more information, see "Training the University...

OF CURIOSITY

You can now do your own ergonomic assessment through the Department of Environmental Health and Safety (DEHS). DEHS has posted a new self-assessment tool on its Web site designed to help people adjust or self-correct their own workstations. For more information, see the self-assessment tool at Office Ergonomic Guide.

Thanks to Linda Kenny, here are interesting facts about the incoming medical students.  The class size is 230; 170 in the Twin Cities and 60 in Duluth.  Minnesota residents are more than 80 percent of the class, and ages range from 21 to 33. The average MCAT score was the highest ever, at nearly 33.  Six are enrolled in the M.D./Ph.D. program. The Duluth campus, which recruits students for its mission of educating physicians for rural and American Indian communities, has 80 percent of its class from hometowns of 20,000 people or fewer; 30 percent are from towns with fewer than 2,500 people. Of the 48 multicultural students, three are Hmong, six are Hispanic, seven are American Indians, and ten are African-American or African.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“You can’t get a cup of tea large enough,
or a book long enough to suit me.”
C.S. Lewis
