Anesthesiology CV Fellowship Program
The University of Minnesota Department of Anesthesiology is once again accepting Cardiovascular Fellowship applications for the 2013-2014 year. The fellowship is twelve months in which the fellow will devote six months’ time in the adult cardiothoracic operating room, two months in the pediatric cardiothoracic operating room, one month in an ICU experience, one month in echocardiography and two months in elective rotations, which may include an additional month in echocardiography, or one to two months in research. Expertise in Adult and Pediatric Complex ProceduresThe goals of the fellowship are to provide the cardiothoracic anesthesia fellow the knowledge and expertise needed for the anesthetic management of adult and pediatric patients undergoing complex cardiac and thoracic procedures. The program is not ACGME accredited to allow for an expanded pediatric experience. However, the clinical and didactic curriculum follows ACGME requirements as they apply to the subspecialty of cardiothoracic anesthesia. By the end of the fellowship the trainee will have gained strong clinical experience and will be fully competent to serve as an independent consultant for the anesthetic management of adult cardiothoracic surgical patients. Advanced Perioperative TEE TrainingThe goals of the TEE training are to provide the fellow with expertise to perform and interpret a comprehensive perioperative TEE examination and fulfill the training requirement for NBE certification in perioperative TEE. One to two months training is dedicated in TEE and TTE at the cardiology echocardiography lab under the supervision of the cardiology staff. Extensive hands-on TEE training is provided in the OR with the cardiac anesthesiologist or cardiology staff. Our transesophageal and transthoracic echocardiography simulator provides additional experience in echocardiography.
