Message from The Program Director

Welcome to the University of Minnesota Anesthesiology Residency. As Program Director I can proudly say that our faculty is fully committed to educating our residents to become outstanding anesthesiologists able to practice in a wide variety of clinical settings, with a wide variety of patient populations. We are dedicated to providing residents with knowledge, skills and attitudes that will allow them, not only to practice their specialty in an expert manner, but also to participate in the development, improvement, and promotion of safe, patient-centered health care systems.

Our residency consists of a diverse family of 21 residents who contribute significantly to the quality of care provided for a broad patient population base at the University of Minnesota Medical Center. In order to provide a wide-ranging experience, our residents’ rotate through seven different hospitals: University of Minnesota Fairview (University Campus and Amplatz Children’s Hospital), Hennepin County Medical Center, Children’s Hospitals and Clinics – Minneapolis, Regions Hospital, Veteran’s Administration Medical Center, Abbott Northwestern Hospital, St. Paul’s United Hospital. Exceptional education is acquired in a collegial, family-friendly culture that offers many professional and personal advantages.

Broad patient base:From neonates to geriatrics, we care for a diverse patient population, drawn from a large geographical area. Their medical needs may be simple or complex, involving surgery or pain management, giving our students a broad-based learning experience.

Didactic program: From lectures, to simulation sessions, problem-based learning sessions, reading seminars, journal clubs, board reviews and mock orals, work-shops, quality improvement projects and other activities our residents attain an extensive knowledge base of anesthesiology practice as a whole.

Right-sized program: To provide the best possible learning environment, our program is large enough to be comprehensive, yet small enough for one-on-one interaction with all faculty. We currently accept seven new residents per year.

Flexible internships: Students may intern at our medical school through a partnership with Hennepin County Medical Center, or they may apply for an advanced (CA) position here and set up an internship at another accredited program. This allows students to work with different colleagues, faculty, and systems, and to explore another community, if they so choose.

Interaction with CRNAs: Our emphasis on a well-balanced education includes training with the CRNA staff. This provides valuable experience with a care team model prevalent in many parts of the U.S.

Collegial, collaborative department: Our department size and philosophy encourage close working relationships. Each resident has a faculty advisor, for both professional and personal support. Residents are encouraged to help each other learn, rather than compete, and eventually become teachers themselves within the program.

Consistent and reasonable schedules: We respect our students’ personal time, and recognize the importance of a balanced life. Reasonable hours and regular schedules make our program a good fit for students with families and other commitments.

Attractive quality of life and cost of living: Our campus is in a vital urban setting, with great housing options just minutes away. The Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area is home to a world-class arts scene, professional sport teams, beautiful parks, and recreation facilities.

Welcome aboard!
