Center Director Marshall Hertz, M.D. Professor of Medicine |
Dr. Hertz is the Medical Director of the Lung Transplant Program at the University of Minnesota. In 2003, he became the recipient of the Murphy Professorship in Advanced Lung Disease - an endowed professorship designated for an outstanding clinician and research in advanced lung disease. The same year, he founded and began to direct the Center for Advanced Lung Disease within the Academic Health Center. In 2007, Center for Advanced Lung Disease was transformed into the Center for Lung Science and Health in order to expand the original mission and scope of the Center to include other aspects of lung disease as well as lung health promotion and disease prevention. Dr. Hertz received his medical degree at the University of Michigan and completed both his Internal Medicine and Pulmonary and Critical Care training at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Hertz' primary research interests include obliterative bronchiolitis and acute and chronic rejection in lung transplantation. In addition to his leadership roles as Medical Director of the Lung Transplant Program and as Director of the Center for Lung Science and Health at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Hertz is also the Medical Director of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplant (ISHLT) Registry and has served on the Board of Directors for the ISHLT.

Executive Center Director David Ingbar, M.D. Professor of Medicine |
Dr. Ingbar is the Division Director for the Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine and the Director of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for the University of Minnesota. In 2007, he became the Executive Director for the Center for Lung Science and Health within the Medical School. He obtained his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, completed his Residency at the University of Washington, and his Fellowship at Yale University. He is a nationally recognized leader in the pulmonary and critical care field. He was elected into leadership for the American Thoracic Society (ATS) and became ATS President in May 2007. ATS is the largest professional, educational and scientific society focused on respiratory, critical care and sleep medicine with about 18,000 members worldwide.

Assistant Center Director Diane L. Kachel |
Diane Kachel has worked in the biomedical and clinical research related to lung health and disease field throughout her entire career. She has held positions in both academia and the medical device industry, primarily in management roles. While conducting basic science research at Mayo Clinic and Indiana University, Diane authored and co-authored numerous scientific publications and frequently presented at national conferences. As a Clinical Research Manager for industry, she managed company-sponsored clinical studies, research administration and development of research personnel. Diane has also performed contract work for the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and is currently a graduate student in the Biological Sciences Program at the University of Minnesota. As an active member of the American Society (ATS) and the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP), she has served on committees and participated in post -graduate courses as both a participant and as a speaker. As Assistant Director for the Center for Lung Science and Health, Diane utilizes her broad background in cell, animal and clinical studies, personel and project management, and administration to coordinate the development and operations of the lung center in areas related to basic science, translational and clinical research, education and public outreach.
