Center Director, Marshall Hertz, M.D.
Professor of Medicine

Dr. Hertz is the Medical Director of the Lung Transplant Program at the University of Minnesota. In 2003, he was awarded the Murphy Professorship in Advanced Lung Disease, an endowed professorship designated for an outstanding clinician and researcher in advanced lung disease. In that same year, he founded the Center for Advanced Lung Disease within the Academic Health Center. In 2007 the original mission and scope of the Center expanded to include other aspects of lung disease as well as lung health promotion and disease prevention. The Center became known as The Center for Lung Science and Health. Dr. Hertz received his medical degree at the University of Michigan and completed both his Internal Medicine and Pulmonary and Critical Care training at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Hertz' primary research interests include obliterative bronchiolitis and acute and chronic rejection in lung transplantation. In addition to his leadership roles as Medical Director of the Lung Transplant Program and as Director of the Center for Lung Science and Health at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Hertz is also the Medical Director of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplant (ISHLT) Registry; he has served on the Board of Directors for the ISHLT.

Professor of Medicine

Dr. Ingbar is the Director for the Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine Division of the Department of Medicine at the University of Minnesota and is Director of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at University of Minnesota Medical Center-Fairview. In 2007 he became Executive Director for the Center for Lung Science and Health within the University of Minnesota Medical School. Dr. Ingbar obtained his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, completed his residency at the University of Washington and his fellowship at Yale University. He is a nationally-recognized leader in the pulmonary and critical care field. He has been elected to various leadership positions for the American Thoracic Society (ATS) and served as the President of ATS from May 2007 to May 2008. ATS is the largest professional, educational and scientific society focused on respiratory, critical care and sleep medicine with about 18,000 members worldwide.
