Institutional Research and Career Development Award Program

IRACDA opportunities offer postdoctoral scholars the chance to develop essential research and teaching skills that put them on the path to academic career success.

During the three-year program, IRACDA scholars conduct directed and independent research in areas like cancer, neuroscience, environmental medicine/toxicology, and American Indian/minority health.

Scholars gain teaching experience through designing or updating a science course and teaching for a full semester in a local participating academic institution that serves underrepresented students.

The program benefits:

  • Scholars, by assisting them in mastering critical academic skills
  • Participating academic institutions, by expanding scientific offerings
  • The nation, by stimulating deserving disadvantaged students to pursue careers in science

IRACDA scholars are matched with research mentors in their areas of research interest, and they receive the guidance from teaching mentors at the participating academic institutions. Different career development opportunities include development of grant writing, publication, presentation, and teaching portfolio components and skills.

Institutional experience on the Medical School’s  Duluth and Twin Cities campuses is available to IRACDA scholars. Scholars participate in monthly activities, which foster collaborative communication, and they are encouraged to review each other’s work, presentations, and participate in social activities.

IRACDA scholars receive compensation  in accordance with NIGMS guidelines.
