The Blood-Brain Barrier is the interface between blood and brain that resides within the capillary endothelium. This barrier is highly active, dynamic and selective and responds to signals from periphery and brain in both health and disease. One key element of barrier function is the drug efflux transporter, P-glycoprotein. It protects the brain from toxic compounds, but at the same time, also restricts therapeutic drugs from entering the brain. This makes P-glycoprotein the primary obstacle to successful therapy of brain disorders. Therefore it is important to understand physiological and pathophysiological mechanisms that regulate P-glycoprotein at the blood-brain barrier. Such an understanding holds the promise to improve pharmacotherapy of brain disorders such as stroke, brain tumors, epilepsy, neuro-AIDS, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease. My research is focused on the following topics:

  • Role of P-glycoprotein in Alzheimer's Disease
  • Modulation of P-glycoprotein during CNS Inflammation
  • Cross-talk between P-glycoprotein and the Innate Immune Response
