Research

I am currently interested in the effect of copper deficiency on iron transport in a developing rat model. Many enzymes involved in the transport of iron require copper as a cofactor for necessary function. A lack of copper means iron transport is impaired in these animals which results in iron levels that are similar to iron deficient animals. Since these copper deficient rats share similar hallmarks to iron deficient rats, I am seeking to determine if some of the effects of copper deficiency seen in the brain are due to a lack of copper or a lack of iron.
