Six Times the National Average
March 20, 2008 47 percent of the Medical School--Duluth campus students who are graduating this spring were matched to Family Medicine residency programs at the Match Day event held on the University of Minnesota campus in the Twin Cities today. This rate is six times the national average of graduates selecting family medicine and is good news for this campus as the national shortage in family medicine physicians increase – particularly in rural areas. Another 25% of our graduates selected other primary care specialties such as Internal Medicine, and the remainder selected other specialties.
“Duluth continues to meet its mission, and I give the credit to the admissions committee, our faculty and community physicians who inspire our students, and to the students who work so hard at becoming a great doctor in family medicine and a great doctor no matter what field they choose,” commented Gary Davis, Senior Associate Dean of the University of Minnesota Medical School—Duluth Campus.
According to statistics released by the American Association of Family Physicians, 1,172 U.S. medical school graduates chose Family Medicine -- 65 more than in 2007 -- a slight upturn. Nationally, even with this increase, only 7.6% of U.S. seniors matched in Family Medicine.
A total of 48 students who entered medical school on the University of Minnesota Duluth Campus will graduate this spring. In the fall of 2007, the Duluth Campus admitted 58 new first year students.
The mission of the University of Minnesota Medical School—Duluth Campus is to be a leader in educating physicians dedicated to family medicine, to serve the health care needs of rural Minnesota and American Indian communities and to discover and disseminate knowledge through research.
