Physiology and Pharmacology
The Departments of Physiology and Pharmacology merged into a single department in 2004 with the goal of improving teaching and research collaborations and streamlining administrative responsibilities. Although some disciplinary distinctions remain for teaching purposes, this integration has been a success.
Research Emphasis:
Diverse faculty research interests include sensory and respiratory neurophysiology, breast cancer endocrinology, cardiovascular, renal, exercise and behavioral physiology and temperature regulation. Our close-knit academic environment in Duluth provides excellent opportunities for collaboration. In addition, because our Medical School is a part of the University of Minnesota system, we have full access to a multitude of Twin Cities campus resources.
Teaching Emphasis:
Our faculty teaches physiology and/or pharamacology to professional, graduate, and undergraduate students.
Faculty members use a combination of lecture, laboratory and small group learning opportunities to provide a bridge between the basic medical sciences and the practice of clinical medicine.
In physiology students discover the principles governing the functions of cells, tissues, organs and complex biological systems such as the nervous, cardiovascular, renal, respiratory, and endocrine systems. In pharmacology, students study principles of drug action, effects of biologically active agents on biochemical and physiological processes, prototype drugs and their congeners and mechanisms whereby drugs can ameliorate or correct pathological processes.
