Mark Deyo-Svendsen, M.D., (Class of ’83) Named Wisconsin Family Physician of the Year October 20, 2009 -- The Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians (WAFP) has announced that Dr. Mark Deyo-Svendsen, Red Cedar Medical Center - Mayo Health System, Menomonie is the recipient of its 2009 Family Physician of the Year Award. Deyo-Svendsen has been a family physician for 23 years and Medical Director of Red Cedar Medical Center for four years. He is an alumnus of the Duluth Campus. Read the complete story... Zumbro Falls Medical Student Interns “Down Home” Once a country boy – always a country boy? At least it seems so for Kyle McKenzie of Zumbro Falls. Currently attending medical school in Duluth, he hopes to one day return to his rural roots, where he finds comfort in small-town living. A graduate of now Plainview-Elgin-Millville High School, Kyle was always drawn to the sciences. Unsure of his exact career path, he enrolled at the University of Minnesota and declared a major in genetics. It wasn’t until he started volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House that his path became crystal clear. More… Alumnus Vainio Launches Educational Initiatives Arne Vainio, M.D., Class of 1994, has launched his educational health message to the Native American community on film and in print. Using himself as a patient-subject, Dr. Vainio is working on a health documentary to show Native men how important it is to get regular checkups, particularly as they age. In addition, in a regional Native American publication, Vainio has launched a series of health-related columns. Click here to read more… Alumnus Dahlman helps establish Kenya's first family medicine residency program Bruce Dahlman's first taste of international medicine, when he was a medical student in 1980, lingered, took hold, and eventually lured him back. Read Sarah's story. Charter Class Celebrates 30 Years in 2006 One thing was certain when the doors opened in the early 70's: the Medical School Duluth Campus has a unique mission. When our first students walked through the doors in September 1972, they knew their school wanted them to leave as well-trained family practitioners who would help alleviate the shortage of rural physicians in Minnesota. Largest Group of Native Americans in 2006 Fifty-six first-year medical students received their white coats this fall on the University of Minnesota Medical School's Duluth Campus. For the first time, the White Coat Ceremony featured two Native American songs performed by the Center of American Indian and Minority Health Drum: the Honor Song and the Traveling Song. The addition underscores the Medical SchoolDuluth's emphasis on educating students to practice in rural and American Indian communities. Read the full story.
