Medical School Equipment

Genomics Node: Equipment for molecular biological applications is available in the School’s genomics node in room 292. Specific equipment includes the following: Agilent 2100 mRNA Bioanalyzer; Genomics facility computers; Axon Instruments microarray scanner; Software for affymetrix Analysis (MAS, DMT) and software for Axon Reader (GenPix 3.0 Javelin); Roche lightcycler; and Nanodrop ND1000 Spectrophotmeter. Thermal Cyclers and electrophoresis equipment are available in individual laboratories. Drs. Lester Drewes and Matthew Andrews are the directors of the Genomics Node. The facility is available to all researchers within the Medical School and area researchers.
- Confocal and Epifluorescent microscopes: A Nikon Eclipse TE2000U confocal microscope is available in room 67 of the Medical School. Dr. Jon Holy (Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology) is the director of the facility. A Nikon Eclipse 300 Microscope equipped with ratiometric fluorescence capabilities (currently configured for calcium and hydrogen ion detection) is available in room 67 also. This unit possesses Metamorph software to facilitate analysis. An additional bank of more conventional microscopes is available in room 287.
- Flow Cytometer
- Proteomics Node: Proteomics node equipment includes the following: Immobiline Dry Strip Rewelling tray from Amersham Pharmacia Biotech for loading protein samples and reswelling dry strips; First dimension IEF-1 Multiphor II Electrophoresis unit with immobiline dry strip kit form Amersham Pharmacia Biotech; Electrophoresis power supply EPS 3501 XL from Amersham Pharmacia Biotech; Fishcer Scientific Isotemp refrigerated Circulator-Isotem 1016S second dimension IEF; Hoefer SE 600 Ruby standard dual cooled gel electrophoresis unit from Amersham Pharmacia Biotech; and Electrophoresis power supply EPS 601 from Amersham Pharmacia Biotech. The Proteomics node is located in room 137 of the Chemistry Building and is available to all Medical School investigators and University of Minnesota-Duluth investigators.
- Laser Capture: microdissection apparatus (Arcturus) allowing the isolation of individual cells for genetic analysi is located in room 277 of the Medical School.
- Other: Classical equipment such as centrifuges, ultracentrifuges, gamma counter, scintillation counters, developers, phosphorimagers, gel docs etc.; transmission electron microscopes; high performance liquid chromatographs; cell culture facilities; mouse embryonic stem cell facility (room 61); autoclave; and various specialized equipment utilized in individual investigator’s laboratories. A Kodak 2000MM system for chemiluminescence, fluorescence and luminescence is available in room 277 of the Medical School.
