Colin Campbell, Ph.D.
Colin Campbell immigrated to the United States with his parents and younger brother when he was a young boy. He was raised in Connecticut, with thoughts of growing up to become a physician—or a member of the Boston Red Sox baseball team. While a college student (Fairfield University, Fairfield, Conn., class of 1981) Campbell was bitten by the research bug, and following a short stint as a research technician at Yale University, enrolled in the biochemistry doctoral program at Boston University Medical School. Following completion of his Ph.D. studies, he pursued postdoctoral studies in Molecular Genetics with Dr. Raju Kucherlapati, first at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and then at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, N.Y. At the completion of his postdoctoral studies, Colin accepted a position as an assistant professor of Pharmacology at the University of Minnesota. During this time, his research interests progressed from basic studies of intracellular trafficking and post-translational modification of proteins to efforts to understand the molecular bases of cancer and aging. His research group is currently focused on the molecular genetics of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA repair in normal and diseased human cells. While research remains his chief passion, Colin has become increasingly devoted to training the next generation of scientists and physicians. In recognition of this interest, he has been appointed to a number of positions, including Director of Graduate Studies in Pharmacology, Associate Director of the Joint Degree Program in Law, Health, & the Life Sciences, and Co-Director of the University of Minnesota’s Life Sciences Summer Undergraduate Research Programs. In addition, Colin is the Program Director of an NIH Bridges to the Doctoral Degree training program. Colin enjoys weight training, cycling, and especially relishes time spent with his wife and two daughters (aged 12 and 13).
