Kola Okuyemi, M.D., M.P.H.


Kola Okuyemi Kolawole S. Okuyemi, M.D., M.P.H., is director of the Program in Health Disparities Research at the University Of Minnesota Medical School, and associate professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health. Prior to joining the University of Minnesota in March 2006, he was associate professor and associate chair for Research in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. Okuyemi received his M.D. degree from the University of Ilorin, Nigeria, and his M.P.H. from the University of Kansas Medical Center. He completed a Family Medicine residency at the University of Kansas Center, and a Research Fellowship at Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Ga. Okuyemi has clinical and research experience with behavioral and pharmacological treatments of nicotine addiction. He is particularly interested in the biobehavioral mechanisms underlying nicotine addiction and smoking cessation. Okuyemi conducts interdisciplinary, observational, and intervention research in nicotine addiction among minority and other underserved and populations. He is principal investigator in a number of research projects including: Understanding Light Smoking among African Americans (funded by the Cancer Research Foundation of America); Addressing Light Smoking in African Americans (funded by the NCI); Effects of Menthol on Bupropion Pharmacokinetics (funded by NIDA); Smoking Cessation in Homeless Populations (funded by the American Lung Association); and Cigarette Craving in African Americans and Whites: An fMRI Study (funded by the Kansas City Area Life Sciences Institute. In addition, Okuyemi has been co-investigator on several smoking cessation projects among minorities and underserved populations. He has served as reviewer for several NIH study sections and several scientific journals. Okuyemi is a member of a number of professional organizations, including the American Medical Association, American Academy of Family Physicians, the Society for Teachers of Family Medicine, the Society for Research in Nicotine and Tobacco, Society for Behavioral Medicine, and North American Primary Care Research Group.
