The newest dual-degree program at the University of Minnesota Medical School provides top-ranked medical students with master’s degree training in biomedical engineering. Biomedical engineering is a rapidly evolving field that applies high-tech research to improvements in health. The 5-year dual-degree program will prepare new physicians who have a command of technology. Most students will begin the M.S. program following completion of the Year 2 Medical School curriculum. 

Medical students who wish to be considered for the M.D./M.S. Dual Degree must make separate application to the Biomedical Engineering Program. Students who are accepted to this program will receive a scholarship for the Master of Science degree year of training.

The University of Minnesota Medical School is one of 10 schools that offers an M.D./M.S. in Biomedical Engineering or a similar master’s degree. Among the advantages of our program:

• The University of Minnesota has a well-established Biomedical Engineering Institute, which takes advantage of its strength in the Institute of Technology, and

• The state of Minnesota has a vibrant medical-device industry, with which the Medical School has strong ties.

John Bischof, a professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, has been named a 2006 Distinguished McKnight Professor.

The University’s Institute for Engineering in Medicine is an interdisciplinary research organization bringing together the collective expertise, imagination, and energy of University of Minnesota faculty from engineering and health sciences with local industry leaders. The IEM’s goal-oriented research projects aim solve problems in health care.
