Although independent research will not always be evident, the individual should have demonstrated involvement in high quality research which has been accepted for publication or is published in peer-reviewed national journals

Publication of clinical observations, reviews, or analytic studies in peer- reviewed journals that contribute new knowledge or organizes, synthesizes, and conveys existing knowledge in a way that enhances the practice of medicine or educational practice.

 

 

 

Development of teaching materials, including new curriculum offerings, educational programs, textbooks, syllabi, computer programs, or video- tapes that significantly improve the method or quality of instruction at his or her hospital or the Medical School.

When distinction in research is the primary basis for tenure, the candidate must also show, at a minimum, evidence of competence in teaching. When distinction in teaching is the primary basis for tenure, the candidate must also show, at a minimum, evidence of competence in research.

Continued development of teaching materials, including new curriculum offerings, educational programs, textbooks, syllabi, computer programs, or videotapes that make a unique contribution to quality and methods of teaching a given subject through the medical school and outside the local community.

Distinction in teaching requires documented evidence of innovation and effectiveness in educational research which have attracted national recognition.

 

Publication of clinical observations, reviews, or analytic studies in peer- reviewed journals that are recognized as authoritative and that influence the practice of medicine or educational practice.

 

 

Distinction in research is based upon:

 

1. A review of the candidate's publications, particularly those in national or international peer-reviewed journals.

Evidence is sought that the work is scholarly, creative, and of high quality and significance, whether focused on laboratory endeavors, clinical investigations, or analysis, or synthesis of clinical observations and experience, or educational research.

 

2. Independence of research accomplishments.

3. External research funding from federal and other national granting agencies which sponsor programs in biomedical or educational research subject to peer review.

 

4. Participation in invited symposia, meetings, and lectures within a discipline.

 

5. Letters from authorities in the candidate's field of research, assessing the scientific contributions of the candidate and attesting to the candidate's national reputation for his or her research.

A recommendation for promotion to Professor is made when an Associate Professor has fulfilled the criteria and standards for the rank of Professor as stated by the Medical School and the Department. The criteria and standards stated for promotion to Associate

Publication in peer-reviewed journals of analytic clinical studies, comprehensive clinical reviews, or textbooks and chapters that are recognized as exerting a major influence on the practice of medicine nationally; may serve as editor to textbooks or journals.

Professor will continue to be applicable during the intervening period of time. The proposal of a candidate for Professor will require evidence of additional academic, scientific, scholarly, and professional achievements beyond that accomplished for promotion to Associate Professor.

Additional accomplishments might include:

Development of original teaching materials, such as new curriculum offerings, educational programs, syllabi, video materials, or computer programs that are widely used not only locally but throughout the country.

1. The establishment of a training program for pre-and/or post- doctoral Fellows in a specific discipline.

 

2. Election to prestigious scientific and/or professional organizations which recognize excellence and significant scholarly academic contributions.

 

3. Letters from authorities attesting to the candidate's acknowledged national and international reputation and recognition of leadership in his/her field, letters from prominent senior faculty members at other universities assessing the candidate's qualifications for promotion to the rank of Professor.
