DESCRIPTION For Faculty whose work is a mix of teaching, scholarship, and applied medical science For Faculty whose primary work is research, but also teach and provide service Adjunct Faculty Non-Faculty
PROMOTION PROCESS Follows Clinical Scholar Statement Follows 7.12 Statement    
RESEARCH AND SCHOLARLY CONTRIBUTIONS

Regularly spends some time on research or other scholarship. Scholarship may be of several types:

 

        Discovery  new principles of biomedical science or education

        Integration  Translational research, connections between discoveries across disciplines

        Application  Technology development, patented discoveries, clinical trials

        Scholarship of transmission of knowledge

Regularly spends significant time on research/scholarship.

 

Scholarship of discovery of new principles of science, medicine or education including basic science, translational science, outcomes research, clinical research

 

Advances the field through significant and frequent publication in highly regarded peer-reviewed journals.

 

National/international reputation as scholar.

  Performs selected elements of the research mission.
EDUCATION

Regularly spends significant time in teaching.

 

Involved in curricular decisions.

 

Develops teaching materials.

 

Disseminates innovations in teaching (e.g., computer programs, video materials, curricula).

 

Recognized for high-quality teaching.

 

Educational program leadership

Regularly commits effort to the teaching program.

 

Recognized for high-quality teaching.

 

Periodically involved with other educational activities such as developing teaching materials, curriculum design

This faculty appointment is available to professionals as a courtesy title for unpaid physicians in the community who volunteer as preceptors or as second title to faculty paid by another institution or as a second appointment to P&A appointees.

 

Promotion in a courtesy appointment in rank is achieved by meeting the established criteria for the regular or clinical scholar or in the case of preceptors, satisfactory and continuing contributions to the teaching program.

APPLIED MEDICAL SCIENCES

Spends significant time in clinical care (>20%).

 

Excellent reputation inside and outside Twin Cities area as an authority in a clinical specialty and expert clinician.

 

        Distinction in clinical sciences manifested by election to distinguished societies, recognition locally and nationally as an expert

        Participation in projects to monitor clinical outcomes.

        Participation in quality improvements.

        Program development.

Commits effort to clinical care activities and is regarded as an excellent clinician.  

Performs selected elements of applied medical sciences.
