DEPARTMENTAL STATEMENT
REQUIRED BY SECTION 7.12 OF
REGULATIONS CONCERNING FACULTY TENURE
DEPARTMENT OF LABORATORY MEDICINE AND PATHOLOGY
I.Introductory Statement
This document describes with more specificity the indices and standards which will be used to evaluate whether candidates meet the general criteria in Section 7.11 of the Regulations. For a complete perspective, the reader is advised to review Section 7 in its entirety.
II.The mission of the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, within the broad mission of the Medical School, is to conduct high quality programs of biomedical research and education.
To be awarded indefinite tenure, a faculty member will be expected to have demonstrated productivity and distinction in research and effectiveness in teaching.
III.Criteria for Tenure
The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology subscribes to the criteria for tenure established by the Medical School. Additional specific statements on criteria for tenure, supplementary to an extension of the Medical School statement, have been developed by the department and are enclosed.
IV.Criteria for Promotion
The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology subscribes to the criteria for promotion established by the Medical School. Additional specific statements on criteria for promotion to the several faculty ranks, supplementary to or an extension of the Medical School statement, have been developed by the Department and are enclosed.
V.Procedures
In initiating and considering proposals for tenure and/or promotion in rank, the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology follows the procedures of the Medical School and the University. These procedures are described in the University document, "Procedures for Reviewing Performance of Probationary Faculty", issued in June, 1986, and in the set of instructions, memoranda and other documents, issued annually by the Dean of the Medical School to each department and for information of faculty members.

Criteria for Appointment and Promotion of Faculty
The Promotions Committee recently considered prerequisites for promotion to various academic ranks and has formulated the following criteria to serve as a guideline.
Introduction. The criteria for promotion are specifically to apply to the academic university promotion categories and are not to be confused with the several other non-academic but hospital or service administrative oriented titles and responsibilities which may be an independent system of recognition. It is assumed that all members of the faculty will participate in teaching and administrative responsibilities of the Department and the Medical School.
I.Criteria for Promotion
The primary criteria should be teaching and research excellence. Other professional activities and public or University service, while compensating for reduced contribution in teaching and research, should not replace either or be required in themselves. Identifiable contri-butions in teaching and research are required. Identifiable professional service activities are desirable as well.
A.Assessment of Academic Activities.
1. Teaching
a.Structured formal and tutorial courses for undergraduate health sciences students
b.Structured courses for postdoctoral or graduate students
c.Guidance of postdoctoral fellow
d.Exemplary clinical teaching contributions
2.Research
a. Creative and scholarly work of high quality and significance
b.Continuing external grant support
c.Participation in symposia, meetings and lectures
d.Guidance of postdoctoral fellows in research
3.Professional Activity
a. Achievement, leadership and development or utilization of new techniques
b. Outreach programs: consultation to health units outside of the academic institution
4.University and Public Service
a. Scholarly discipline in community and University service--this aspect is neither required nor to be considered as replacement for academic activities in teaching or
b.Participation in major scholarly advisory bodies
B.Specific Criteria for Entrance into Various Ranks
1.Instructor
Completion of professional training and demonstrated research/scholarly accomplishment.
2. Assistant Professor
a. Demonstrated ability and involvement in teaching, and
b. Demonstrated high quality research/scholarly achievement. Capable of performing independent research/scholarship.
3.Associate Professor
Evidence that candidate has developed excellence in teaching and research contributions which are original and of high quality. Should have demonstrated the ability to supervise the training of research investigators and/or teachers. If teaching is the main criterion, the candidate's unique contributions to this area should be clearly recognized and activities will be assessed by national peers sought by the Promotion Committee.
4.Professor
In addition to the above, must have demonstrated continual outstanding productivity, growth, leadership an independence. National authority. The person's performance must be graded truly outstanding in teaching, research, and other scholarly professional activities.
II.Documentation of Teaching Activity
Types of teaching: Structured - formal classes; tutorial; graduate students; postdoctoral students; workshops - continuing education.
Evaluation of teaching: Course titles and credits; numbers of students; hours of involvement (contact, preparation); course objectives, manuals, texts, etc.; students' evaluations of course and individual; peer evaluation - direct observation; ultimate success of students; awards; innovative programs.
III. Documentation of Research
Publications, senior authorship; independent programs, collaborative programs; creative, high quality, significance; external grant support, participation in symposia, scientific meetings.
