National Conference for Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students The following awards are given in conjunction with NCFMRMS. Deadline: May American Academy of Family Physicians First-Time Attendee Awards Students are asked to write a 500-word essay on why they are interested in attending NCFMRMS and becoming a family physician. Family Medicine Interest Group Leadership Awards This award recognizes FMIG participants for developing and orchestrating individual FMIG projects. Recipients are asked to write a short essay to appear in the Exchange newsletter. University of Minnesota Family Medicine and Community Health & Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians Sponsored Scholarships First- through third-year medical students are asked to write a 500-word essay on why they are interested in attending NCFMRMS and becoming a family physician. Research AAFP Scientific Assembly Grants The Scientific Assembly is the national meeting of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Up to 15 pre-assembly awards of $1,000 are given to help defray travel expenses of bringing an exhibit to the fall assembly. Limit one grant per exhibit. Deadline: May MAFP: Mersy Medical Student Summer Research Externship Program The Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians provides a $2,000 stipend to a first- or second-year medical student to conduct a clinical research project under the guidance of a family physician, who also receives $500. Deadline: March Minnesota Medical Foundation: Student Research Grant MMF student research grants support University of Minnesota medical students who are pursuing careers in academic research and medicine. A $4,000 stipend for 12 weeks of research conducted during free or elective periods is awarded to third- or fourth-year medical students. A $3,000 stipend for eight weeks is available to first-year medical students. Medical school faculty must serve as project supervisors and provide laboratory facilities. Deadline: *Third- and fourth-year medical students - January, May, September *First-year medical students - February Other American Board of Family Medicine: Pisacano Scholarship The Pisacano Scholarship provides leadership training and up to $28,000 per year (for up to five years) for 10 outstanding fourth-year medical students nationwide. Students must make a commitment to the specialty of family medicine. The program is designed to reimburse medical school debt incurred by students at the conclusion of residency. Deadline: March Awards for Excellence in Geriatric Medicine These awards were established by a Department of Family Medicine and Community Health faculty member to recognize superior research on aging and geriatric medicine. The University of Minnesota Medical School awards a $1,000 scholarship to two medical students submitting the best papers on a topic dealing with care of older adults. Deadline: February Medical Student Award for Contributions to Family Medicine The Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians recognizes one fourth-year medical student for family medicine activities on a local, state, or national level.
