Welcome to Smiley's!

Mission: Provide outstanding care that improves the health of our diverse patients and urban community, while educating experts in family medicine for today and tomorrow

Goal: Give residents the opportunity to grow and develop into outstanding family physicians

Program Highlights:

  • Graduates are well trained for practice. Most remain in Minnesota, although a number have worked internationally, practicing in urban, suburban, and rural areas. Many continue to provide full spectrum family medicine, while others have chosen to work in emergency rooms or as hospitalists. Some also pursue fellowships, most commonly geriatrics and sports medicine.
  • Faculty are outstanding physicians, teachers, and researchers, with varied interests, and have received numerous honors, awards, and grants and produced many publications.
  • Curriculum emphasizes chronic and ambulatory care, women's health, and sports medicine, while providing excellent training in family medicine fundamentals and incorporating humanities, cross cultural care, and bioethics. Residents also have five months of elective time.
  • Clinic amenities include a fully-implemented electronic medical record, supporting the practice of evidence-based medicine. We also place an emphasis on continuity of care and have integrated care teams that include a pharmacist, care managers, and counselors.
  • Patients are ethnically and socioeconomically diverse — spanning new African immigrants and refugees to Augsburg College students to established professionals.
  • Our program is designed to support residents through close advisor/advisee relationships, staff dedicated to education and scheduling, and an open door [program director] policy. We foster resident and faculty dialogue and have dynamic systems in place to incorporate feedback and continuously improve the quality of both education and patient care.
