Vince and Mary Kay Hunt Global Health Fund

Vincent Hunt, MD, and Mary Kay Hunt, MPH, have devoted their lives to promoting family medicine and primary health care.

FM Vince and Mary Kay HuntIgniting a Passion

Mary Kay and Vince’s perspectives on health care began to form during eight years of rural practice in northern Minnesota, where they witnessed firsthand the effects of social, cultural, economic, and environmental variables on health. Vince also directed the family medicine residency at St. Paul-Ramsey Medical Center (now Regions Hospital) and chaired the Department of Family Medicine at Brown University, and Mary worked for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These experiences birthed a passion for improving the health of the underserved.

The Hunts have gone on to provide consultation to medical schools, family medicine residencies, and ministries of health around the world. American Academy of Family Physicians vice president Dan Ostergaard, MD, said, “The Hunts’ passion for improving global health through education and training of primary care and public health professionals has inspired many who follow them.”

Honoring a Vision

For more than half a century, the Hunts have drawn from their combined expertise in family medicine and public health to pursue “health for all.”

They believe people are best served when their health care systems are based on the principles and values of primary care. The University of Minnesota Department of Family Medicine and Community Health shares in that belief and created the Vince and Mary Kay Hunt Global Health Fund to support the Global Family Medicine Pathway.

Global Family Medicine Pathway

The Global Family Medicine Pathway allows University of Minnesota family medicine residents the opportunity to enroll in a longitudinal educational track with structured international experiences, equipping them with knowledge and skills to provide high quality, culturally appropriate care at home and abroad. The fund supports resident stipends, exchanges, and curriculum development.
