Transgender Health Services
The transgender community is diverse, with specific health needs. The Center for Sexual Health provides care for this varied population, which includes individuals who identify as transgender, transsexual, crossdresser, bigender, drag queen, drag king and gender queer, as well as their families. We welcome all of you.
As it is for anyone, it’s important for transgender individuals to receive accurate health information and competent services that are tailored to their specific needs. Our caring, professional staff has advanced training and expertise providing health and psychological services for the transgender community.
Clinical services for transgender individuals and their families include:
- Physical health care, including prescriptions of appropriate medications and feminizing and masculinizing hormones
- Psychological, physical, and psychiatric evaluations
- Individual, group, couple, and family psychotherapy
- Evaluation and treatment for children and adolescents
- Recommendations for genital reconstructive surgery
- Ongoing support for transgender and transsexual individuals after transition
- Counseling for intersexuality
- Sex therapy
Hormone Therapy and Surgery
The Center for Sexual Health offers up-to-date, evidence-based hormone therapy and facilitates referrals for breast augmentation, chest reconstruction, and genital reconstructive surgery (both male-to-female and female-to-male). Recommendations for hormone therapy and genital reconstructive surgery are based on the World Professional Association for Transgender Health’s Standards of Care.
Consultation, Advocacy, and Training
A wide variety of consultations are available, including the facilitation of coming out in the workplace or school and the provision of customized trainings. Our staff offers seminars, lectures and workshops as well as continuing education for health and social service providers. We also provide forensic evaluations and expert witness testimony.
Transgender Therapy Groups
Groups are designed to explore one’s gender identity and to discover a gender role and expression that is comfortable. Transgender therapy groups support a spectrum of gender identities and provide opportunities to learn from the experiences of other members. Facilitated by two therapists, the groups meet twice a month for two hours.
Therapy for Crossdressers and Their Partners
Individual, couple, and family psychotherapy is available for those who crossdress and their partners. Therapy focuses on understanding and effectively managing the desire to crossdress as well as its effect on intimate relationships and sexual functioning.
Because crossdressing remains stigmatized by the general public, crossdressers commonly experience shame, secrecy, compulsivity, and fear of discovery. Partners often experience shock, confusion, anger and fear before reaching acceptance. Our therapists can help you and your partner deal with these issues and maintain a healthy relationship.
Therapy for Children and Adolescents
Our treatment approach with children and youth is non-judgmental and affirming. We recognize diversity and fluidity in gender identity and expression. We provide individual and family therapy, guidance to schools, and, if indicated, puberty delaying hormones and other medical interventions.
Community Advisory Board
The Center for Sexual Health values direct community input and feedback. The transgender Health Services are guided by a community advisory board representing the diversity found in the local transgender community.
