Summary of Fellowship Alumni Outcomes

Completion of Advanced Training in Research
Nearly all of our fellows earned a master’s degree (MPH in Epidemiology, MS in Clinical Research). Five earned PhDs which they began while in our program.

Career Advancement in the Faculty Role
All of our alumni who have sought promotion and tenure at their institutions have succeeded. Two are already full professors, and another’s promotion packet is currently under review.

Successful Track Records in Acquiring Research Funding
Among the many granting agencies supporting our alumni’s research projects are the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Centers for Disease Control, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the American Heart Association, the National Institute on Aging, Bristol-Myers Squibb, state health departments, and the National Cancer Institute.

On-going Dissemination of New Knowledge
Our graduates are highly productive in research, routinely publishing and presenting new knowledge in areas of high national need such as: access to healthcare (especially for the elderly and chronically ill), tobacco cessation, diabetes control, cardiovascular risk reduction, patient safety, cancer screening, and cross-cultural healthcare.

Involvement in National Scientific Activities
In recognition of their research expertise, our graduates are called to serve as manuscript reviewers and on grant review panels for regional and national funders.

Professional Leadership
Our alumni hold prominent leadership positions in their institutions. They are directing residency programs and programs in medical student education, academic affairs, and research. One graduate directs a cancer prevention program in a university cancer center, another a federation of practice-based research networks, and another a university-based center for integrated healthcare. Some have even gone on to direct their own successful faculty development fellowships.

Research and Professional Accolades
Our alumni’s honors are extensive. The following is a small sampling of their many accolades:

  • Advanced Research Training Grant, American Academy of Family Physicians (2002-04)

  • Distinguished paper award, North American Primary Care Research Group (2002).

  • Excellence in Research Award, American Geriatrics Society (2000)

  • Generalist Scholars Award, Bush Fellowship for Health Professionals (1999-2000)

  • Cancer Control Career Development Award, American Cancer Society (1994-96)
