Rapid Response Steps

If you wish to respond to an agency’s call for a rapid response proposal—that is, one for which the department’s standard deadlines for both sending in the Intent to Submit and completing the proposal cannot be met—please do the following:

1.   Send in the Intent to Submit form immediately.

2.   Call the interim research director, Kevin Peterson, MD, MPH (612-624-3116), to set up a conference call.

This call will include you, the interim research director, the department head, and the grant accountant. The goal of this call is to determine if a proposal of reasonable quality can be successfully completed in the time allowed. Among the criteria for making this decision are:

  • How well-developed the proposal already is
  • Whether this is a one-time grant solicitation or there is an option to submit in a future cycle
  • Competitiveness of the funding program, likelihood of the proposal being funded
  • Number of other grants that the department needs to submit at the same time
  • Complexity of the proposal, including length, budget, number of collaborators
  • Experience of the PI in preparing grants

If it is determined not to be possible to respond to the request (which we expect will be an unusual circumstance), further discussion will occur—if the PI wishes—about alternatives for taking advantage of this funding opportunity. For example, it may be possible for the faculty member to be named a consultant on a colleague’s grant.
