Call Schedule

First-year residents begin taking clinic call in January. For six months prior to this, first-year residents are paired with a second- or third-year resident five to seven shifts in order to become familiar and comfortable with the expectations of clinic call. Some rotations have their own call schedule, and the frequency varies: OB (q 3-4); pediatrics at Children's Hospitals and Clinics, Minneapolis (q 4); pediatrics at North Memorial (home call q 3-4). Overall, first-year residents have approximately 30-35 overnight call shifts, including clinic call, peds, and OB.

Second-year residents have approximately 15-20 clinic call days per year, including OB call.

Third-year residents have approximately 14-18 clinic call days per year, including OB. They have several periods with no call depending on their choice of electives.

Clinic call responsibilities include caring for inpatients from the clinic, seeing clinic patients in the Emergency Department, working up all clinic admissions from the ED, and answering clinic patient phone calls. Second- and third-year residents also back up first-year residents on OB call. The clinic call schedule is as follows:

Monday-Thursday 5 p.m. - 10 p.m.
Friday 5 p.m. - 7:30 a.m. (Sat.)
Saturday 7:30 a.m. - 7:30 a.m. (Sun.)
Sunday 7:30 a.m. - 10 p.m.

The remainder of overnight hours are covered by the night float resident on the family medicine service.
