St. John's Hospital Program

Residents in the St. John's program work in a community hospital known for its strong family practice base. As the only residents in the hospital, they receive support and attention from many specialists who serve as preceptors or instructors. The busy emergency room, intensive care unit, and obstetrics service complement in-depth teaching services in internal medicine, pediatrics, and surgery.

Our family practice clinic opened in April, 1996, and provides all the residents' clinic experience with the exception of certain community health and away rotations.

What are some of the St. John's Program's features?

  • The family medicine faculty is caring, dedicated, skilled and interesting.  Additionally, and unique to the program, is a full-time internist who provides consistent bedside and daily didactic teaching to our inpatient team throughout the three years.  Dr. Peter Cermak has received outstanding teaching awards for many years and is instrumental in making our program exceptionally strong in the area of internal medicine.  Dr. Bill Roberts is a past president of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), and provides a strong foundation for our education in the area of sports medicine.
  • The call system is unique.  The on-call team consists of one first-year and one second or third-year resident, and is responsible for all the evening and weekend patient care responsibilities.  This has two significant implications.  The first is that each resident not on call (or on an ER rotation) is free on weekends and usually after 5 p.m. during the week.  The second is that residents on call are always involved in the full spectrum of family medicine, including deliveries, admissions, procedures, and hospital and clinic patient care.
  • St. John's is truly a community based primary care hospital where family medicine is not only respected but absolutely necessary.  Most patients are admitted to St. John's by family physicians.  It is the smallest hospital in the Twin Cities to have a residency, yet very busy.  Not only is the program unopposed, there are never other residents in the hospital.  St. John's Hospital is suburban, with the most modern technologies.  While Phalen Village Clinic is also modern, it is located ten minutes away in a diverse inner-city neighborhood.
  • All essential specialties are represented on the medical staff by willing physicians teaching one-on-one, so residents are able to remain at one hospital during most of the three years.  We have well-established and interesting elective months in such places as Hawaii, Korea, and Hungary.
  • We have fun.
