Genetics Division of the Department of Medicine Genetic cell

The Department of Medicine’s Genetics Division was established in 1975 under the direction of Richard A. King, MD, PhD, concomitant with the establishment of the joint Medicine-Pediatrics Clinical Genetics Service for the University of Minnesota Hospital and Clinic.  In 1981, Dr. King obtained federal funding to establish the Minnesota Clinical Genetics Program, with monthly clinics in Duluth, St. Cloud and Mankato.  This funding also supported an additional medical geneticist in pediatrics (to fill the vacancy in pediatric genetics) and genetic counselors for the university and each outreach location.  The Minnesota Clinical Genetics Program continued until 1985 when federal funding was discontinued.
