Hepatology

The Division has always had an active liver disease program.  The program provides care for all patients with liver disease.  Special areas of interest have included the management of patients with chronic viral hepatitis and, in particular, hepatitis C.  In addition, the Division has a long-standing interest in the management of portal hypertension and, together with members of the Department of Radiology, has performed seminal research on the use of TIPS (transjugular intrahepatic portasystemic shunts) for the management of complications of portal hypertension.  The program also offers patients the opportunity to participate in a number of experimental protocols for the management of various forms of liver disease.  Together with members of the Department of Surgery, there also has been an interest in the development of artificial liver devices.
