2007 Annual Report

Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition division of the Department of Medicine Dr. Lake and nurse

The Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition provides an array of clinical services, educational programs, and active clinical and basic science research activities.  In addition to the faculty who are part of Division at the University campus, there are also University faculty who participate in GI research and training activities at the Minneapolis Veterans Administration Hospital, Hennepin County Medical Center, and Regions Hospital.

The Division plays a leading and integral role in liver transplantation, it is home to the Minnesota Pancreas and Liver Center, and it continues to expand its inflammatory bowel disease program.  Historically, the Division has made a number of seminal contributions in the fields of hepatology and nutrition, including being arguably the birthplace of Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), and generating important knowledge in our understanding of liver metabolism.  More recently, the Division has contributed to the understanding of the role of biliary endoscopy in the management of a number of clinical conditions, including Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction.

The Division continues to maintain highest ambitions for excellence in all three of its major missions: clinical service, teaching, and research
