Biography
Dr. Joseph is a general internist in the Department of Medicine. She received her medical training at the University of Michigan and received a Masters of Public Health in Epidemiology from the University of Minnesota. She is currently directing a new Applied Clinical Research Program in the Department of Medicine. Her primary research interests are in tobacco control. Dr. Joseph has conducted research focused on reducing harm from tobacco use, with an emphasis on randomized controlled clinical trials and health services research. Her work has focused on smoking cessation and smoking reduction interventions for special populations of smokers that experience unique barriers to delivery of tobacco treatment. These include patients with cardiac disease and alcohol dependence. She has also conducted clinical trials to test methods to increase the delivery of evidence-based tobacco dependence treatment to smokers, for example comparing outreach through medical clinics to direct-to-consumer marketing. In addition, Dr. Joseph has a leadership role in state-wide tobacco control efforts in Minnesota by serving as Board member and past-president of the Minnesota Smoke-Free Coalition, and past member of the Board of Directors of the Minnesota Partnership for Action Against Tobacco, funded by the state tobacco settlement.
