The Division of General Internal Medicine has developed an outstanding cohort of clinicians, teachers, and young educational leaders. The division is united in the mission of patient care and has enthusiastically accepted and embraced teaching and educational leadership roles. The majority of faculty members are clinical scholars whose academic activities involve scholarship related to clinical and educational activities.

MEDDOM GIM Newspaper Image JPGDr. Anne Joseph’s study on smoking cessation was recently published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, and featured in an article in the local newspaper Star Tribune. Her research project found that they could boost the success rate as much as 75 percent by extending treatment to 12 months. As part of the program, counselors stayed in touch with patients for a full year, calling some patients as many as 50 times. The counselors adopted what they called a "chronic disease" model of care, which meant they didn't give up if the smoker relapsed.

Steven Miles was featured in a Minn Post blog about the possibility of a federally mandated HPV vaccine for women ages 11 and up. HPV vaccination is not mandatory in Minnesota, but the Minnesota Department of Health has been charged with educating parents about the vaccine.

William Robiner, PhD, Health Psychologist, was selected as one of three individuals who will be inducted in the 2011 Academic Health Center Academy for Excellence in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. National experts in the field of scholarship of teaching and learning, including inaugural members of the Academy for Excellence, reviewed all nomination dossiers. Based upon their evaluation and recommendations, the final award nominees were selected. This award recognizes Dr. Robiner’s contribution to the education of students as well as to the advancement of knowledge about teaching and learning.

Jasjit S. Ahluwalia, MD, MPH, Director of the Center for Health Equity, has been selected as the recipient of the American Public Health Association’s Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Section’s 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award. This award is bestowed upon the person who demonstrates distinguished service to the alcohol, tobacco and other drugs field, which spans the duration of their career. Dr. Ahluwalia has been invited to receive the award at the 139th APHA Annual Meeting in Washington DC on November 1st, 2011.
