| We welcome your application to join more than 800 residents and fellows who are learning from a rich variety of patient care experiences, from cutting edge research, and from experts in their specialties at the University of Minnesota Medical School and its affiliated institutions.
To be eligible for a residency/fellowship position at the University of Minnesota Medical School, residents/fellows must be graduates of medical schools in the United States or Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or graduates of United States Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). International medical graduates outside the United States and Canada must have one of the following: a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, an unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. state, or successful completion of a Fifth Pathway Program in an LCME accredited medical school in the United States.
The Medical School participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Each accredited residency/fellowship program in the medical School is expected to select its residents/fellows through this matching program or an appropriate alternative matching program. With approval from the Dean, a program may select residents outside the match process if necessitated by unusual circumstances such as a serious shortage of qualified applicants in the field or an unexpected vacancy in the Residency/Fellowship Program.
Residency/fellowship programs select from among eligible applicants based on their educational history and performance, relevant board and licensing exam scores, and personal attributes, such as interpersonal skills and motivation. Personal attributes are evaluated on the basis of the applicant's references, and for applicants under serious consideration, through personal interviews.
Whether selected through the NRMP or outside the match, the Medical School does not discriminate against resident/fellow applicants on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, age, marital status, disability, public assistance status, veteran's status, or sexual orientation.
