GME Observers


Observer Instructions

To determine which instructions to use, please review the UMMS/Fairview Health Services Observer/Visiting Physician Contact Grid (pdf).

Graduate Medical Education Observers
All interested applicants should be directed to the UMMS Human Resources, department or division in which the observership will take place.

The department must appoint a sponsoring faculty member.
Prior to the observership beginning, the sponsoring department must have on file all items listed on the GME Observer Checklist which include, but are not limited to:
1. Completed Observer Application
2. Two letters of recommendation from persons familiar with their performance
3. Medical School transcripts/Diploma
4. Up-to-date curriculum vitae
5. If International Medical Graduate (IMG), documentation that observer is in this country on a valid, current visa
6. Completed immunization forms
7. Completed HIPAA training verification
8. Documentation of health insurance, valid in the U.S.
9. A signed Students and Other Non-Faculty Observers Agreement
10. The sponsoring department must send a copy of the signed Students and Other Non-Faculty Observers Agreement to the UMMC Fairview Medical Staff Office.
11. The observer must go to the UMMC Fairview Parking Office and obtain a photo ID badge.  The badge must indicate they are an observer and also state their name.  Upon completion of the observation experience, the ID badge should be returned to the Parking Office.
12. An exit interview with the observer should be completed.

The sponsoring department's Human Resource office will retain all observer files.

The Graduate Medical Education Office must be notified about the Observership so that all appropriate information can be entered into the Observership database.
