However there are limits on public employees (i.e. religious displays must be kept out of public areas). Reasonable religious accommodations must be granted to persons requesting unless it is documented that it would pose an undue hardship on the department/program. Common requests for accommodation: - Prayer
- Observance of religious holiday
- Wearing religious clothing or head coverings (as long as it doesn’t interfere with patient safety)
Common accommodations may include: - Flexible scheduling
- Voluntary swaps/substitutes
Examples of undue hardship: - Regular payment of overtime for other staff that may have to cover
- Hiring of additional employees
- Diminished efficiency
- Workplace safety
