Needle Stick/Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure - What to do

Blood-Borne Pathogen Exposure card (pdf)

If you are exposed to blood borne pathogens:

  • Wash the exposed area immediately.
  • Report the exposure to your supervising preceptor or designated person and go to the recommended facility immediately for treatment (see below for locations).
  • Identify the source patient with the help of your preceptor and/or the recommended facility.
  • Use the institution's standard procedures to assess the source patient for risk of infection.
  • If there is a high risk of infectious disease, seek prophylactic medication treatment within 2 hours of exposure.  Your immediate supervisor will suggest a site for initial treatment.
  • Whatever the risk assessment, every resident or fellow with a Blood Borne Pathogen Exposure must complete a follow-up exam within 72 hours of exposure.
  • Contact your training program coordinator for a Worker's Compensation claim form on the next work day.  Complete the claim form and submit it to the Workers Compensation provider.
  • If infected with HCV, HBV or HIV, you must report this infection to the Blood Borne Infectious Disease Review Panel by contacting the Graduate Medical Education Office at jorda042@umn.edu.  In cases of HIV and HBV, it is also required by state law.
  • IMPORTANT:  If you need treatment, go to Employee Health Services during the day and to the Emergency Room at night.
