Orientation: Incoming Resident and Fellow Requirements

Requirements for New Residents and Fellows: Completion of Web-Based Modules and Review of Orientation Materials

Introduction: This page provides information and resources related to meeting the requirement of completing web-based modules prior to the start of your training.  This page also provides access to information distributed at new resident/fellow orientation.  Trainees who start after July 1st of each academic year are required to view all modules and review all orientation materials.

2012 GME Orientation Dates Set:
GME Orientation will be held on Monday, June 18, 2012 and Monday, July 2, 2012.

Location:
Orientation is held at the University of Minnesota East Bank Campus, on the 2nd floor of Moos Tower at 515 Delaware Street SE, Minneapolis, MN.

Start and End Time:
Check-in begins at 6:45 AM with a light continental breakfast provided. Orientation begins promptly at 7:15 AM in 2-650 Moos Tower, and ends by 12:00 PM.  UMMC provides lunch for residents/fellows that complete all of the sessions. Please find out from your program - in advance - where you are supposed to go after GME orientation concludes.

Representatives from the Office of Student Health Benefits, American Medical Association, Minnesota Medical Association, Biomedical Library and other organizations will be available during check-in and during lunch.


Parking Options:
Parking facilities that are close to Moos Tower include Washington Avenue Ramp and the Oak Street Ramp. GME does not reimburse for parking. Please ask your program how they manage parking for GME orientation. Do not park in the Medical Center Parking Ramp which is located on Delaware Street between Harvard Street and Walnut Street. Your program cannot validate parking in this ramp.
 
Orientation Requirements:
All incoming residents and fellows who have never completed a residency or fellowship at the University of Minnesota are required to attend one of our GME Orientation sessions. 

If you are unable to attend GME Orientation, please contact your Program Coordinator for make-up requirements.

In addition to attending GME Orientation, incoming residents and fellows must also complete REQUIRED pre-orientation training requirements for compliance purposes.  Please see below for more details.


International Medical Graduates (IMGs) Orientation: 2012 Date Set
A special IMG Orientation Session will be held on the evening of June 18, 2012, for all incoming residents and fellows who are IMGs, new to the University of Minnesota, and who are also new to the US Medical System.  For the first time, this event will be open to all new IMGs in any GME program in the Twin Cities.  Please see the Orientation Materials for IMGs section for more information and for details on the IMG Orientation Moodle course.  Additional information can be found at our IMG webpage.  Questions can be directed to Erica King at king0367@umn.edu.

AY 2012-2013: GME ORIENTATION ONLINE PRE-ORIENTATION TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

Introduction: GME Administration offers the two REQUIRED orientation resources shown below online for all new incoming residents and fellows.  Incoming residents and fellows are able to complete these training requirements at their own pace before arriving to the U of M.  Compliance is tracked in RMS, and Program Coordinators are able to monitor compliance for incoming residents and fellows and follow-up with them, when required.

  2. Once you have viewed/reviewed the items listed above, complete the Compliance Tracking Form and submit to GME for tracking purposes; compliance will be monitored via RMS.  Information on how to send to GME can be found on the form.

This overview describes the process for respirator fit testing. Patient handoffs and transitions of care are very important processes in most training programs and essential for optimal patient care. This session is designed to provide a basic overview of why and when handoffs are necessary and the necessary components of a successful handoff, and will give residents an opportunity to observe and practice effective handoff skills.Great tips on topics such as time management, conflict management and staying focused.
