Administrative Information: Introduction

On behalf of the Dean, program directors, faculty, and staff, welcome to your Graduate Medical Education (GME) experience at the University of Minnesota Medical School!  We hope that the time you spend with us will be both educational and enlightening.

The University of Minnesota is one of the most comprehensive public universities in the United States and ranks among the most prestigious. It is both the state land-grant university, with a strong tradition of education and public service, and the state's primary research university, with faculty of national and international reputation.

This Institutional Policy Manual is referenced in your Residency/Fellowship Agreement with the University of Minnesota.  It contains descriptions of the policies, procedures and information that apply to you in your role as a resident/fellow.  Your Program Manual is specific to each program and your program can tell you where to access it.  All materials are written in accordance with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Should any information in your Program Manual conflict with the Institution Manual, this manual takes precedence.

Residents/fellows herein referred to as trainees throughout the rest of this document, are responsible for familiarizing themselves and adhering to the policies and guidelines contained in this Manual.  This Institution Policy Manual can also be found on the GME website at www.med.umn.edu/gme.  Click on Residents and Fellows Benefits/Resources, and then click on the Institution Policy Manual.

All information outlined in these Manuals is subject to periodic review and change.  Revisions may occur at the program, Medical School, or University level.

Once again, welcome to the University of Minnesota!

Louis J. Ling, MD
Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education
