Policy
Each year from mid-January through early June, the ACGME requires residents and fellows to complete an online survey. Each program’s trainees are scheduled to complete the survey every other year. This general survey, which will take residents about 12 minutes to complete, contains questions about their clinical and educational experience, as well as duty hours worked. Only your currently active full- and part-time residents and fellows are required to participate. Please note at least 70% participation is required. If there is less than 70% participation, your trainees will be resurveyed the next year.
GME Administration strongly encourages programs to ensure that their trainees complete the survey in a timely manner. This data is used by site visitors at the time of your next ACGME site visit.
Process
GME Responsibility
- Prior to survey period GME administration will email an ACGME Resident Survey Tip Sheet.
- After the survey period has ended GME administration will send a communication to the program directors asking for a written response to any areas shaded in gray. A specific time frame for presentation to the GMEC will be outlined in that communication.
Program Responsibility
- Review the ACGME Resident Survey Tip sheet with residents/fellows prior to completing the survey to ensure they understand the questions that are being asked. Your survey results will have an impact on your next ACGME site visit.
- After the survey has been completed meet with the trainees and discuss any areas of noncompliance that were raised during the survey.
- Program directors must prepare a written response to any areas of >20% noncompliance in the time frame requested by GME Administration. Please note that failure to respond in a timely manner will result in a letter being sent from the DIO to the program director with a copy to the department chair. If there is still no response, a follow-up letter from the DIO will be sent to the department chair.
