Graduate Program Foreign Language Requirement

The Program requires a reading knowledge of two foreign languages for the Ph.D. degree and one foreign language for the M.A. degree. Ordinarily, students satisfy this requirement with French and/or German. You may petition the Director of Graduate Studies to substitute another language, if your research interests will require you to read sources in that language. You should pass your first foreign language examination during your first year of graduate study. Ph.D. students should pass their second foreign language examination before the end of the second year.
