Clinical Services

HOT Division clinical service activities can be divided into four disciplines:

Non-malignant hematology
The non-malignant hematology group is lead by Mark Reding, M.D.  Dr. Reding's group provides a variety of services to patients with non-malignant hematologic conditions. Dr. Reding's group has focused on the development of a comprehensive hemostasis and thrombosis team providing expert care and consultation for patients with hemophilia as well as a variety of other hypo- and hypercoagulable states. The group provides advice to the special coagulation laboratory at the University of Minnesota and runs the Hemophilia Clinic.

Malignant hematology
The malignant hematology group is led by Bruce Peterson, M.D. This group emphasizes participation in protocol-driven experimental therapy, including phase II-III national group studies as well as phase I and phase II clinical trials testing locally developed therapy.

Solid tumor oncology
The solid tumor oncology group is led by Doug Yee, M.D. The group participates in phase II-phase III national group protocols as well as phase I-II locally developed and pharmaceutical clinical trials. Individual faculty are encouraged to focus on a specific tumor site (e.g. breast cancer) and to participate in Cancer Center-sponsored "interdisciplinary site-specific teams" involving other clinical specialists (e.g. Radiation Oncology) and scientists focused on the treatment of a specific tumor. The Hematology/Oncology faculty staff two inpatient Oncology/Hematology services, a busy outpatient Oncology/Hematology Clinic, Oncology and Hematology consult teams.

Blood and marrow transplant
The BMT group is led by Daniel Weisdorf, M.D. This is a large and established program focusing on human hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and immunotherapy for a variety of malignant and non-malignant diseases. Seven faculty staff a busy inpatient service with an average census of 15 patients undergoing the acute phase of their transplants. The faculty also staff a BMT Clinic open seven days per week which sees approximately 25 patients per day.
