Ayesha Khalil, MBBS

Dr. Khalil

I was born and raised in Pakistan. I graduated from Quaid-e Azam Medical College Bahawalpur, Pakistan obtaining Bachelors in Medicine, Bachelors in Surgery (M.B; B.S).  Quaid-E-Azam Medical College is one of the top medical institutions in Pakistan, constantly striving to bring itself at par with international standards of patient care.

After completing my M.B.B.S. degree I worked in the field of medicine, surgery and psychiatry. It was during this time that I developed a keen interest in internal medicine and decided to pursue this field as my specialty. When I was doing Fellowship in Internal Medicine in Pakistan my husband was offered a job from a company based in Minnesota and I also considered this as an opportunity to get further medical training from the United States.  After passing USMLE in the top 5th percentile I started residency at Abbott Northwestern hospital in Minneapolis.  After completing residency I joined the teaching faculty at Abbott Northwestern hospital.

My interest in Hematology and Oncology is based on a simple fact; it is the only specialty that has the best combination of elements in medicine that I enjoy.  I opted for an observership in the division of Hematology, Oncology and Transplant at the University of Minnesota because of my special interest in this field and my lack of exposure to allogenic and cord cell transplant during residency.

During observership I experienced the field of Hematology/Oncology in the twenty-first century. I observed patients with new diagnosis of cancer and felt their feelings of trust and confidence in their oncologists. It enhanced my knowledge of various treatment options for patients with hematological malignancies and different types of stem cell transplant.  It strengthened my desire to pursue a Hematology/Oncology fellowship.

I would like to thank the staff of the Division of Hematology, Oncology and Transplantation, with a special thanks to Dr. Hammerschmidt and DR Weisdorf, for providing me with this wonderful opportunity

Besides medicine I love to travel, read and spend time with my family.
