Jaya M Mothukuri, MD
As a medical graduate from India, I always aspired to get the best medical training available outside. After receiving my MBBS degree from Osmania Medical College, one of the top medical schools of my country, I moved to US to pursue my Master’s in Health Administration from FDU, NJ and got ECFMG certification simultaneously. I believed an opportunity to observe in a university-based hospital would give an insight into the US health care delivery and what I gained was more than I realized or expected.
Hematology and oncology was always my second interest after Cardiology but now, it has become my first interest. U of M has been renowned for its research and developments in this field and this opportunity has further reinforced my interest.
While here, I actively participated in the ward rounds, case discussions, clinics and departmental conferences including grand rounds, M&M, research conferences. I had a chance to involve in the resident morning reports, core conferences and observe the well-structured residency training program in a university setting which was highly impressive and thus, consolidating my interest in this university and program. Being focusing on research side of medicine, the extensive quality research done here has only increased my enthusiasm and zeal. It was really an incredible learning experience which I enjoyed thoroughly and will cherish always. This wonderful opportunity gave me adequate clinical exposure and to get acquainted with the US health system which will definitely help me in my future training. It also made my career goals strong and clear while preparing me for the expectations in this field. It was indeed a life-changing experience for me!
I sincerely thank Dr. Hammerschmidt for considering me worthy for this opportunity and my mentors, Dr. Reding, Dr. Potter, Dr. Haddad for their invaluable guidance and encouragement. I also thank the fellows, Dr. Dhatri, Dr. Saritha, Dr. Sanjay, Dr. Om, Dr. Gautam and Dr. Amer for their help and support all through along with the residents and ward staff for being so warm and friendly and the patients who allowed me to see and learn. It was truly a privilege and honor to work with such knowledgeable and dedicated people in this field and I look forward for a chance to work with them in future. On the whole, this experience was extremely rewarding and satisfying giving me utmost professional and personal bliss.
