OVERVIEW
Welcome to the Infectious Disease Fellowship Program at the University of Minnesota. The faculty of the Division of Infectious Diseases and International Medicine is committed to helping our trainees acquire:
1. Expert-level competence in the clinical management of common and uncommon infectious diseases, including emerging and international infections
2. Investigative skills required for a successful research-based career in academic infectious diseases
Our fellowship is oriented toward academically inclined applicants who have demonstrated an interest in and aptitude for research, and who desire a research-focused career.
Excellent options for laboratory, clinical, and epidemiological research training are available (see Research Training and Training Grant, under "What's Inside").
Research (including laboratory, clinical, and epidemiological research) is emphasized throughout the 3-year fellowship program via:
1. Bi-weekly ID research conferences (Adult and Pediatric ID, Microbiology)
2. The fellow's own research projects (guided by an expert faculty mentor)
3. Posters and oral presentations at multiple local and national meetings
4. All-day "ID Research Retreat" each May
5. Semi-annual progress reviews by the Scholarship Oversight Committee
6. NIH Loan Repayment Program (100% success in the past 2 years)
7. Career Development grant applications (for the post-fellowship transition to independent investigator status)
8. The Spink and Wannamaker lecture series (research-based presentations from "ID giants")
9. School of Public Health courses in research methods & grant writing (optional)
10. Journal manuscript reviews (with faculty mentors)
11. Multiple research prizes (University of Minnesota, VA, local IDSA chapter)
12. Fellows' monthly journal club (critical review of the ID literature)
