Curtis L. Carlson Award (Karolinska Institute)

This exchange program was established in 1990 through a generous endowment provided by Curtis L. Carlson, a highly successful Swedish immigrant to Minnesota who wanted to promote scholarly exchanges between the University of Minnesota (U of M) Medical School and the Karolinska Institute (KI) in Stockholm, Sweden. The purpose of this exchange program is to provide clinical or research experiences for medical students at each institution. (In addition to medical students, graduate and post-doctoral students and faculty members may apply for Carlson Awards; however, these applications are handled separately- please inquire via the IMER Office).

Eligiblity: U of M medical students taking clinical or research electives at the KI will be in their 4th or late 3rd year of medical school. KI medical students will be at an equivalent level of training as 4th year U of M medical students, i.e, they will have completed core clinical courses, such as Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, General Surgery, prior to matriculating at the U of M.

Number and amout of awards: Up to six U of M medical students and six KI medical students will be accepted into this exchange program per year. Stipends generally are $2,000 for U of M medical students. Financial support for KI students is available through the Edward Stenberg Endowment.

Requirements for credit:

Students are expected to keep a journal and to prepare a two to three page report which will be filed with the IMER Office within 30 days of the student’s return from abroad. This report and assessment by the KI faculty member overseeing the clinical or research experience (form provided by the IMER Office) will are requirements for academic credit.
