The Seoul National University (SNU) College of Medicine/University of Minnesota (UofM) Medical School Student International Study Award was created through an endowment established in 2002 by generous donations from alumni of the SNU College of Medicine.  The purpose of this award is to encourage an exchange of medical students seeking educational experiences in international health issues and to enable medical students to study in another country.  The awards are intended to support a wide variety of student projects in basic and applied research, clinical work and public health.  The clinical/research experiences may be on site at the receiving institution or at an affiliated facility.

Eligibility: Current University of Minnesota medical student or South Korean medical student (priority given to students from SNU)
Number and amount of awards: Determined each year by the program fund balance within the Minnesota Medical Foundation
Procedure/basis for selection of awardees:

In applying for the award, students will provide a brief (one-page) description of the proposed experience, identifying academic center or health care center, supervisor(s) and proposed activities.  The application will include a description of how the experience may enhance the student’s perspective on medical care.  Applications will be judged on the quality of the medical experience itself and the student’s statement.  The time frame of the international elective should be no less then 4 weeks with higher priority given to those electives lasting 6-8 weeks.

Requirements for credit:

Students are expected to keep a journal and prepare a two to three page report which will be filed with the International Medical Education and Research (IMER) Office within 30 days of the student’s return from abroad.  The report along with the preceptor’s report from the international institution will be required for academic credit.

Recipients of the award will be required to obtain emergency assistance insurance (see IMER Office for ideas on insurance coverage).  The fee for this insurance should be submitted to the IMER Office for separate reimbursement.
Details for application:

Applications, generally from 3rd  and 4th year medical students, are reviewed twice each year and are due in the IMER program office by April 30 or December 31.  The IMER Awards Committee will review applications by June 1 and February 1, after consultation with MMF, notification of awards will be sent to medical students by June 15 and February 15 respectively.
