PURPOSE:
The intent of this research award is to foster infectious disease research by a University of Minnesota medical student in a country other than the U.S.A. This purpose is in keeping with the endowment agreement between the Minnesota Medical Foundation and the family of Wesley W. Spink. Dr. Spink, a University of Minnesota Medical School leader, was an international authority in the field of infectious diseases.
RESEARCH STIPEND:
Up to $4,000 will be awarded annually to the student selected by the Wesley W. Spink Research Award Committee (see below). This award should be used to cover student expenses (travel, accommodations, etc.) incurred during a research experience, generally six to twelve weeks, at an international site.
When appropriate, additional funding up to $500 may be applied for to support the research laboratory in which the student will be carrying out his/her work.
APPLICATION AND AWARD PROCESS:
Applicants should submit a one to two-page description of their proposed research project listing the title of the project, UofM faculty advisor, faculty mentor at the international site, time period during which the research will be performed, and a general description of the proposed study (specific aims, background, and methods).
Application deadline is December 31 of each year. Applications should be submitted to the International Medical Education and Research Program Office. Awardees will be selected by the Medical School Senior Associate Dean for Education and the Director of the International Medical Education and Research Program.
The awardee and the Minnesota Medical Foundation will be notified upon the decision of the Committee.
