This study is funded by a grant awarded to the Cardiovascular Cell-Therapy Research Network from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.
What is the purpose of this trial? The study is testing the safety and effectiveness of giving a person’s own stem cells versus placebo 3-7 days after a large heart attack. The stem cells may help the body repair the damage that occurs with a large heart attack and improve the pumping function of the heart. Follow-up consists of five return doctor visits over two years. Who can participate?To qualify for this study, a person must have a first-time heart attack which results in decreased heart function. The heart’s ejection fraction must be less than 45%. The timing for delivery of the stem cells is 3-7 days after a heart attack.
