Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biophysics
Predoctoral Fellowship
"Direct Fluorescence Detection of Dynamic Protein-Protein Interaction in Cardiac Calcium Pump Regulation"
Mentor: David D. Thomas, Ph.D.

Ben Mueller was born and grew up in Germany, and moved to MN 9 years ago. In 1998 he graduated from Saint Olaf College with a degree in Chemistry and enrolled in graduate school at the U of MN in biochemistry. After one year in graduate school, Ben was accepted into the MD/PhD program in the Medical School, a program in which he is rigorously trained to become a physician scientist. After completing years 1 and 2 of medical school, Ben returned to graduate school to continue his PhD work on calcium regulation in the heart. His current project involves fluorescence detection of interactions of the Sarcoplasmic Reticulum CaATPase with its regulator, Phospholamban. Ben plans to finish his thesis work in the summer of 2004, after which he will return to Medical School to receive his MD in 2006 and enroll in a surgical residency. Eventually, Ben would like to work at a large university hospital to practice, do research, and teach.

In his free-time, Ben enjoys playing hockey and soccer, and renovating his new home.
