Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program
"Preparation of Myosin Light Chain Mutants for Spectroscopic Analysis of Heart Disease"
Mentor: Osha Roopnarine, Ph.D.

This past year, Ericka learned many molecular biology techniques and procedures from her advisor, including mutagenesis, expression and purification of mutant essential light chains (ELC). She also labeled these proteins for Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET), which is used to determine the effects of Familial Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (FHC) mutations on muscle contraction. She looks forward to expanding her knowledge in the laboratory and learning the techniques of muscle biochemistry.
