Dr. Kenneth K. Liao earned his M.D. degree at Hubei Medical College, China,
in 1984. He completed surgery residency training and earned a doctoral degree
of surgery from Beijing Medical University, China, in 1989. He then became
a research fellow and research associate at Albert Einstein College of Medicine,
working on a new mitral bioprosthesis, anticalcification treatments for bioprostheses,
and surgical treatments for heart failure. He continued his general surgery
training at the Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center in New York,
then completed his thoracic and cardiovascular surgery training at the University
of Minnesota in 2002.
Liao's clinical focus is adult cardiac surgery. He is especially interested
in heart and lung transplantation, implantation of ventricular assist devices,
and minimally invasive heart surgery. Liao's lab research interests include
using current cell and tissue bioengineering technology to improve the endothelial
covering of bioprostheses and searching for more durable bioprostheses.
Liao is an author of more than 60 journal articles and published abstracts.
He has received multiple national and regional awards for his research and
clinical work.
